Appendicitis
Acute inflammation of the vermiform appendix — the classical surgical emergency. Delay risks perforation, peritonitis and a far more difficult recovery.
Symptoms
Pain that begins around the navel and migrates to the right lower abdomen over 6–12 hours, loss of appetite, low-grade fever, nausea, and marked tenderness at McBurney's point.
Recent advances in management
Laparoscopic appendicectomy is now standard — three small ports, an overnight stay and a return to normal activity within a week. Single-incision (SILS) approaches leave a near-invisible umbilical scar, and selected uncomplicated cases can be trialled on antibiotics alone.
