Breast Abscess
A localised collection of pus within the breast — most often in lactating mothers (puerperal abscess) but also seen in smokers and in the sub-areolar region of non-lactating women.
Symptoms
A hot, red, tensely swollen and exquisitely tender lump in the breast, fever, and — in nursing mothers — pain during feeds and a difficult latch.
Recent advances in management
Repeated ultrasound-guided needle aspiration under local anaesthesia, combined with targeted antibiotics, now resolves the majority of abscesses without an open incision. Formal drainage is reserved for large or multi-loculated collections and uses a small, cosmetic incision.
