Breast Lumps & Cancers
Any breast lump deserves a triple assessment — clinical examination, imaging (mammography or ultrasound) and needle biopsy. The overwhelming majority are benign fibroadenomas or cysts; the minority that are malignant are highly treatable when caught early.
Symptoms
A painless lump, skin dimpling or puckering, nipple retraction, unilateral nipple discharge (especially if blood-stained), and any palpable lump in the axilla.
Recent advances in management
Breast-conserving surgery with oncoplastic reshaping now spares most women a mastectomy. Sentinel lymph-node biopsy avoids the morbidity of an axillary clearance, and targeted therapy — guided by hormone-receptor and HER2 status — has transformed long-term survival.
