Burns
Injury to the skin and deeper tissues from heat, chemicals, electricity or radiation. Severity is graded by depth (first-, second-, third-degree) and by percentage of body-surface area involved.
Symptoms
Red, painful, blistering skin in superficial burns; pale, leathery, non-blanching skin in deeper burns; fluid loss, low blood pressure and — in extensive burns — early systemic shock.
Recent advances in management
Early tangential excision and split-thickness skin grafting, biological dressings such as collagen and hydrocolloid sheets, and laser-assisted scar remodelling (fractional CO₂ laser) have dramatically improved both survival and long-term cosmetic outcome.
