Diabetic Foot
A spectrum of foot problems in diabetic patients — from callus and ulcer to deep infection, osteomyelitis and gangrene — driven by neuropathy, poor blood supply and immune compromise.
Symptoms
Numbness or a burning sensation in the feet, non-healing ulcers on pressure points, black or blistered skin, foul-smelling discharge, and — in advanced cases — systemic fever.
Recent advances in management
A multi-disciplinary approach — tight glycaemic control, offloading footwear, endovascular revascularisation, sharp debridement, negative-pressure wound therapy, and low-level laser therapy to accelerate wound healing — has halved the amputation rate in the last decade.
