Gall Stones
Hardened deposits — cholesterol, pigment or mixed — that form within the gallbladder. Many remain silent for years; those that migrate, obstruct or inflame become symptomatic and require surgery.
Symptoms
Sharp, colicky pain in the right upper abdomen after fatty meals, radiating to the right shoulder blade, nausea and vomiting, and — if a stone lodges in the common bile duct — jaundice with dark urine.
Recent advances in management
Four-port laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the world-standard treatment, with day-care or overnight discharge. For common-bile-duct stones, single-stage laparoscopic exploration and ERCP with sphincterotomy avoid a second operation.
