Hernia
A defect in the abdominal wall through which tissue — usually fat or bowel — protrudes. Inguinal, umbilical, incisional and hiatus hernias each have their own natural history. None resolve on their own.
Symptoms
A soft lump that appears on standing or straining and reduces on lying down, a dragging or aching sensation, occasional pain, and — as an emergency — a lump that becomes tender, tense and irreducible.
Recent advances in management
Laparoscopic TEP/TAPP mesh repair for inguinal hernias offers a return to desk work in five days and to physical activity in three weeks. Robotic and 3-D-mesh techniques handle recurrent and giant incisional hernias with excellent long-term recurrence rates.
