Hysterectomy
Surgical removal of the uterus, indicated for fibroids, uncontrolled menorrhagia, endometriosis, prolapse or gynaecological cancer. Approaches — abdominal, vaginal or laparoscopic — are chosen case by case.
Symptoms
Heavy or prolonged periods, chronic pelvic pain, a palpable pelvic mass, dragging sensation of prolapse, or an abnormal Pap smear on follow-up biopsy.
Recent advances in management
Total laparoscopic hysterectomy — with or without robotic assistance — has replaced most open operations. Small ports, negligible blood loss, discharge in 48 hours and a rapid return to work make it the preferred route wherever anatomy allows.
