Liver Abscess
A localised collection of pus within the liver — amoebic (common in India) or pyogenic (bacterial). Untreated it can rupture into the chest or abdomen with catastrophic consequences.
Symptoms
High spiking fever with rigors, right-upper-abdominal pain that may radiate to the right shoulder, loss of appetite, weight loss, and — occasionally — jaundice.
Recent advances in management
Percutaneous ultrasound-guided catheter drainage combined with targeted antibiotics has replaced open surgery in almost all cases. Amoebic abscesses respond dramatically to metronidazole; large or multi-loculated collections drain within days through a small pigtail catheter.
