Pilonidal Sinus
A chronic sinus in the natal cleft — the crease at the top of the buttocks — caused by hair burrowing into the skin. It affects young, hirsute men and recurs stubbornly if not managed correctly.
Symptoms
A midline pit or pits over the sacrum, intermittent discharge of pus or blood, a tender fluctuant swelling during acute flares, and offensive-smelling drainage.
Recent advances in management
Laser pilonidal sinus ablation (SiLaC / LEPSiT) is a scarless, minimally-invasive technique — the sinus is entered with an endoscope, hair and unhealthy tissue are removed, and a laser fibre closes the tract from within. Discharge is same-day and recurrence rates are dramatically lower than with open excision.
