Warts
Skin and mucosal growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They may be common (hands), plantar (soles), filiform (face) or anogenital (condylomata) — each with its own treatment nuance.
Symptoms
Rough, cauliflower-like growths on the skin or genitalia, painful pressure lumps on the sole of the foot, itching or bleeding of anogenital warts, and cosmetic embarrassment.
Recent advances in management
CO₂ laser vaporisation is the definitive treatment — the wart is precisely ablated layer by layer under local anaesthesia with negligible bleeding and an excellent cosmetic result. Cryotherapy, electrocautery and topical agents remain useful adjuncts.
